The BOSS LADY’s No B.S. Approach – Skin Cancer 101

Skin Cancer is no joke. It’s real, and it happens a lot more often than people may realize. You may have cancer on your body right this very second. You also might be in complete denial, or operating very passively about it. I know I did. Sort of.

I found my own skin cancer (on my chin) prior to my getting diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma, and treated successfully via Mohs Surgery – 1 pass. This was March 2017, but I had a hunch for well over a year, prior to going to the Dermatologist. Notice how I said Dermatologist, not general practitioner. To correctly find and diagnose, the concerned area must be biopsied, not frozen off! I scold my guys about this, all the time. Also, when I hear the term “pre-cancerous,” it drives me nuts. Anything, can become cancerous. It is, or it isn’t – that’s what we need to know. The end.

Here’s my BOSS LADY APPROVED tips and tricks for handling this specific topic, whether male or female. Note : Men are more prone to skin cancer than women. Detection : Women average 25 – 45 years of age, men 45 – 65, and usually diagnosed too late. You’re never too young, too old, or ‘too ethnic’ to acquire skin cancer. It only takes 1 – 2 burns in your lifetime, or a genetic history of skin cancer in your family, to develop. If you’ve ever used tanning beds, increase that by 50%.

Sunscreen 101 : Wear it, on ALL exposed skin.

– Apply naked, then get dressed. Spread beyond the lines of your clothing! Meaning, not just to the sleeve, but beyond the sleeve line. This protects you when your clothing ‘shifts.’

– Spf 15 – 30 for everyday – mostly indoor activities.

– Spf 25 – 50 for everyday – mostly outdoor activities.

Got BURNED?

– Get out of the sun! The cascade of free radical damage has begun (like the zombie apocalypse), and no continued application of sunscreen will protect you anymore. Now you need to clean, cool down, neutralize, and feed that skin (aka, the bullet to the head – kills the zombie) with the right post-care.

– Higher quality sunscreens can both protect and heal your skin, simultaneously. Which means, you can wear them while you sleep. Utilize the less expensive sunscreens on your body. Getting the best bang for your buck, whilst still covering all bases.

Dermatology 101 : How to get in faster!

– Use RED FLAG terms : itchy, color / size change, bleeding, not healing properly, scabbing, discomfort, etc.

– A skin cancer check is FULL BODY. That’s how it’s performed, and supposed to go down. No exceptions.

– ABCDE (doesn’t have to be a MOLE) guide

– asymmetry, border, color, diameter, elevation / evolving (check out impactmelanoma.org for more info).

Get checked every 6 months, if you’ve had skin cancer. Get checked once per year, if you’ve been skin cancer free for 2+ years. Stop making excuses. Just do it. Save your life, and others, by sharing this information and putting it to action. *To this date, I’ve helped many of my male clients get properly checked, diagnosed, and treated for skin cancer. At least 8 cancerous lesions (that I’m aware of) have been found and successfully removed. That alone, is rewarding. Use your own experiences, to help others!
